The 2019 AIA St. Louis Design Awards ceremony was held on Friday, October 11 at the Contemporary Art Museum. Trivers was thrilled to receive the only Honor award in the Architecture category for Woodward Lofts. Built in 1925, the Woodward + Tiernan Printing Company Building is now home to 164 loft-style apartments now known as Woodward Lofts.
Jury comments: This conversion of a printing factory into apartments is an impressive adaptive reuse, precisely because the very wide plan of the factory resists easy conversion into dwelling units. The architect’s use of section and exterior voids creates distinctive social spaces and intriguing relationships between neighbors. In addition, the existing buildings form, materials and details were reused extremely well, producing a unique building that evokes yet transcends its past. The use of CLT in the interior is a key component that elevates the environmental quality of this adaptive reuse.
