Following an $11 million renovation, The Sheldon Concert Hall and Art Galleries has reopened with updated spaces designed to enhance the visitor experience while honoring the character of the historic venue. As architect and interior designer, Trivers worked closely with the project team to create welcoming, flexible environments that support the organization’s diverse programming and strengthen its role within the Grand Center Arts District.

The renovation focuses on improving comfort, accessibility, and connection across the building. Enhancements include a reimagined entry sequence, expanded lobby and bar areas, improved gallery spaces, and a new central stair that strengthens circulation and visibility throughout the facility. Updated lighting, signage, and a new marquee reinforce The Sheldon’s presence along Washington Avenue while supporting increased activity on the Steward Family Plaza.

“Reimagining this portion of the Sheldon experience has been a complete joy for our team,” said Joel Fuoss, FAIA, Principal at Trivers. “Celebrating the varied programmatic requirements of modern, flexible art galleries complemented by intimate and welcoming hospitality spaces, the design challenge was unquestionably unique but thoroughly collaborative. Cognizant of both visual and performing arts programming, the design infuses needed programmatic support with a new sense of clarity and a significantly elevated audience experience.”

As a longstanding cultural destination in St. Louis, The Sheldon continues to provide meaningful artistic experiences that strengthen the region’s creative community. Trivers was especially honored to celebrate the firm’s 50th anniversary in the reimagined space, recognizing the shared legacy of institutions committed to shaping the cultural fabric of St. Louis.
