Nine PBS: Inside the Old Courthouse Renovations

Created on

Trivers is the lead architect for the renovation of the historic Old Courthouse in St. Louis, which was featured in a recent Nine PBS Living St. Louis segment.

For the Old Courthouse’s second major renovation since it was originally constructed in 1862, Trivers focused on enhancing its functionality and the overall visitor experience while maintaining the building’s historic integrity. The design team renovated 6,700 square feet of exhibit spaces, replaced outdated building systems such as heating and cooling, and installed new fire suppression systems.

Improving accessibility to the landmark structure was a primary goal of the project. Trivers added new elevators to bring visitors up to the second floor where they can view the exhibits in the rotunda and experience the renovated historic east courtroom. Exterior pedestrian ramps designed according to the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties have replaced a single outdoor lift and allow all visitors to enter through both iconic porticos.

The Old Courthouse is scheduled to reopen to the public this spring.
