The former B'nai Amoona Synagogue, originally designed by German architect Eric Mendelsohn in 1946, is one of only a few contemporary buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In close collaboration with the COCA staff, the facility was analyzed and a master plan was developed for an approach to the renovation and addition. Needs were identified for both the current facility, as well as the addition to house dance studios, rehearsal spaces, a performance theater, black box, art gallery, studios and classrooms, as well as upgrades to building systems. A solution was derived, which embodies COCA's passion for the arts and complements the existing Mendelsohn architecture, yet remains unique to its own form.
