St. Louis, Missouri
610,000 Square Feet
Most Enhanced Award, Landmarks Association of St. Louis
Regional Excellence Award, St. Louis Construction News & Review
Built in two phases in 1906 and 1919 for the Grand Leader department store, the 610,000 square foot building covers an entire city block and has an important presence along downtown St. Louis' Washington Avenue corridor. After nearly a century of use as a major headquarters and retail destination, the building will soon be completely renovated and converted into an urban mixed-use facility.
The design by Trivers includes 130 condominiums, 62 residential apartments, a 200-key hotel, retail and below-grade parking. A key element of the plan involves the removal of a three-story connector bridge from the St. Louis Centre shopping mall that effectively destroys the otherwise dramatically improved Washington Avenue streetscape.
